I’ve spent the afternoon sitting in front of my computer and listening to groups from my past. Simon and Garfunkel, The Limelighters, and the Kinston Trio. A real kick from the past and music unlike most of the groups we hear today. Many of the song’s lyrics reflect a desire for peace and understanding between the vast variety of people in this country.
This land is your land, this land is my land
From the California to the New York islands
From the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and me
This is a Woody Guthry song. He wrote songs describing the plight of the migrant farmers, the immigrants who harvest our crops and of peace and understanding.
Last night I had the strangest dream I never had before, I dreamed the world had all agreed to put an end to war.
A sentiment put to song and never achieved.
With the government shutdown approaching and the right-wing crazies trying to throw our country into chaos, I worry that war is coming to our country. Democracy doesn’t seem to be a goal of the Repubs, their only goal being money and power. There’s no room for the ordinary American and ordinary desires. Some of these people are actually calling for an armed rebellion. Their leader, The Donald, is pointing the way. Scary.
