Antarctica and Back

We spent 41 Days on the Zaandam, a ship 780 feet long and 106 feet wide, with 10 decks available to passengers. There were 12 elevators, a work out area, many restaurants, bars and places to eat. There was a casino, shops and a concert hall with nightly performances. There were two swimming pools. There were 900 people on board and 550 crew. The Zaandam could carry 1400 passengers in 716 cabins.

Everything was done for you. You left your cabin for breakfast and when you came back the bed was made and everything was straightened out. You went to diner and when you came back, after a show, the bed was turned down, the chocolate was on the pillow and a towel animal was looking at you. The people that staffed the ship were invariable smiling and pleasant. The ship was the cleanest place I have ever been. The food was plentiful, varied and good. I started out wondering how I could last 41 days, and leaving the ship feeling I could have continued for the remaining 37 days to Rio and north. However, our cat would have been really pissed if we had been gone longer. There’s more to say, but I’ll leave it for another day.
